Skeptics In The Pub: Edzard Ernst
This evening it was my favourite monthly event, Skeptics in the Pub, where all of London’s Dawkinsistas gather to stand-up and celebrate science, rationalism, and sticking it to the creationists.
This month’s speaker was Edzard Ernst, co-author of Trick or Treatment. It was particularly timely because recently, as you might have heard, his co-author Simon Singh has been suicide by the British Chicopractors because he exposed them as talking bollocks.
It was interesting stuff. It turns out that Earnst once ran a scientific trial to test spiritual healers and got 50 grands worth of funding which to do it. Needless to say, the results proved spiritual healing is a crock of shit.
The best gag of the evening was when answering a question he said he had to put his “homeopathy hat” on to answer a question, only to remark that it was “invisible, because it has been diluted so much”. I guess you had to be there.
It was also exciting to meet a bunch of people I know from Twitter - which is fast becoming my primary means of communication.
