James O'Malley: Event Log

Star Trek (Again)

Yesterday was an action-packed day. Not only did I go to the Masonic Hall (see below), but I missed seeing Nick Griffin and the opportunity to shout “fascist!” at someone in Westminster by only a matter of minutes (by the time we got there only protesters remained… though I did see a box of eggs on the grass). I did see former-Cabinet Minister Charles Clarke though leaving Millbank, and as he walk past me I said “please get rid of the Prime Minister” to him. He smiled at me and gave an affirmitive nod.

I also, and this is the main purpose of this post, went to see the new Star Trek film again. I saw it a few weeks ago, but my friend Katy was down in London and hadn’t seen it, and I reasoned that it was definitely worth a second viewing.

I picked up a lot more on second viewing too - at risk of sounding like a twatty English graduate, it became more clear just how many pieces of clever foreshadowing there was in the dialogue.

It also highlighted some of the little enjoyable absurdities in the film which you miss first time around as you’re too dazzled by the spaceships and Starfleet protocol.

For example, when Spock boards the ship containing the red matter, when he reaches the pilot’s seat, it completely unneccessarily automatically revolves around incredibly slowly, and this is met with a gasp of amazement.

And who the hell builds a space-ship full of dangerous ledges and no hand-rails? I know the Romulans are evil, but that doesn’t make the society immune to health and safety.

And what’s with the really dodgy moral message at the end? Old Spoke says something like “Sometimes you shouldn’t do what is logical but follow your emotions” - what horrible advice! Call me a cold-hearted rationalist but surely a logical approach is always the best one?

Also, there’s definitely no post-credits sequence.
