James O'Malley: Event Log

Richard Herring at Fat Tuesdays

Slowly attempting to catch up with my log of exciting things that I have done, I went to see Richard Herring’s Hitler Moustache show in what was basically a practice run of his national tour, which is on now. It was in a pub in Islington, so as you might expect, I ended up speaking to people who worked for The Guardian and the BBC (100% true).

I’d never seen a full Richard Herring show live before, only bits and pieces of him as part of other shows (like the Godless shows), and on Twitter, so wasn’t entirely sure entirely what to expect. I was worried the show may lack the intellectual firepower of, say, Robin Ince or Stewart Lee, but I was wrong - aside from being very funny indeed, there’s also a thoughtful narrative about tackling fascism and the BNP, and some genuine anger, and deconstruction of the values that we, as liberals, take as a given.

It was thoroughly excellent - and by weird coincidence earlier that day I discovered via Twitter that I was in the same building as Herrings’ homeopathy-apologist podcasting partner, Andrew Collins. I very nearly ran around looking for him to record an interview for the Pod Delusion on the week for 1023, of all weeks, but couldn’t bring myself to be quite so mean.
